Dr Jenner’s House, Museum and Garden: discover the home of the country doctor whose work changed the world
This is a small museum based inside Edward Jenner’s family home which commemorates his life and work and promotes the science of immunology. As the pioneer of vaccination against smallpox, Jenner is considered the father of immunology and responsible for saving millions of lives from a disease which ravaged young people throughout the world.
When we initially discussed the idea of having a virtual reality game set in Jenner’s former home, we wanted it to be reconstructed as it would have looked to a visitor at the time of Jenner’s death in 1823. In order to do this, we have tracked down records describing the house and its grounds, read letters, looked at paintings and spoken to former residents. We have also looked at other houses of the period to get inspiration for the design of wallpaper and carpets, which we would struggle to find out from documentary sources. We came across quite a few surprises too, such as the room we thought was the Dining Room turning out to be Jenner’s Drawing Room!
We are very excited to see for the first time the house as it might have looked when Jenner lived here and we think that our visitors, and people playing the game, will enjoy this too.
